Winter Fall eBook Byron Tucker Felicia Sullivan

Slight Spoiler Good book. Made me even more fearful of Yellowstone. However, I couldn't stand how the family reacted to the whole situation. How could they not grasp how serious their situation was? Even towards the end, I didn't get that they quite understood. They were incredibly wasteful. And I think the nucleur attacks were far fetched. Most countries, if not all, who have competent leaders would know that Yellowstone erupting would effect all countries. Why waste attacking and not preparing? I don't want to sound morbid but, it made no since that their daughter survived. It would have been slightly more realistic if she, like most people in medical need perished. Also, as much as the daughter was mentioned, I didn't bond with her. She was very loved but, I just didn't know her. She should have been given some say in the story line. I know I'm being harsh, the book was good. Those things just irritated me. Oh and the President should have never been brought into this. Whole different story line that just didn't blend in well, with no real leads. But, even with all of my thoughts, I'd still recommend to those who like apocolyptic books.

Winter Fall eBook Byron Tucker Felicia Sullivan Reviews

I liked this book. It was a page turner for sure.

This family was ill prepared and pretty ignorant to the needs in life. They were used to living in the high life in their nice suburbs. With everything at hand or no more than a phone call away, private schools, a good paying career, this family had little worry in life.

They are in a position to take a trip to Yellowstone in what turns into an unbelievable fight for survival. Much of their luck is very hard to believe and in many ways simply impossible. But, it is a fictional book, afterall.

The family was likable. The kids, while much of their portrayed thoughts or words are not that of a teenager these days and many times was very cheesy ("two thumbs up with a smile"), were a good part of the book. The mother was the most in denial of them all and plays little to the story other than to be the one that freaks out in a tough situation or is a good cook. I really got to dislike her character, from the get-go when she stated her dislike of firearms. Though, I guess that is the mindset of many who live in Illinois.

Even with the spelling and gramatical flaws, the bad protrayal of the kid's perspective and the annoying mother, I really liked this book. I have read many small-name authors so I am used to this kind of writing. The thing that keeps me interested is reading a story while getting perspective of an author's ideas about survival in various situations. This book certainly did not fall short on that.

I did have concerns early in the book about the motor home. I wasn't quite sure what was strapped to the motorhome to stop 7.62mm AK-47 rounds, as it was never explained exactly what material was used. From the beginning, I was thinking about how they protected the tires from being shot out, if at all, and why they did not take this into consideration for their preparedness before hitting the road.

There were parts of the book that were unexpected. When the grandmother hits the road to head to see her son's, for example. Imagery in the book led to very colorful mental images, some intense, some nice, others scary and a few depressing and sad.

I really hope this author writes a second part to this book.

I think the story of the family is pretty much done, but I'd love to see Ryan and Nora be forced to evacuate completely or in some part on foot, perhaps with a dog sled somehow or maybe the snow mobile. Maybe Yellowstone continues to erupt, ending all hope of any summer in the Northern States in any forseeable future. Perhaps head them toward South Texas or into Mexico as refugees. More survival on the road, stopping in areas to escape blistering cold storms, blizzards, etc... maybe making a friend or two along the way or going into a larger city in search for supplies, hoping it is empty or at least has very few evil-doers. Perhaps even break the trek into two books. Perhaps something happens that Sam and his family must return to America, to Texas or wherever with Ryan and Nora trying to reunite with the family, maybe something happens that they have to bring Henry with them. Maybe Costa Rica decides to extracate all those with American descent or civil war breaks out there, or another country invades or something.

In any case, I hope to read more like this from this author.
I was going to rate this at a 3, because the story itself was pretty good. However, I could not get past my extreme dislike for the main characters. You almost wanted to root against them. The only character that I liked was the "prepper" Uncle Ryan, who seemed to be the only one making sacrifices in this apocalyptic saga. He knew his brother and his wife did not like him (thought he was crazy actually), yet he did whatever he could to save their ungrateful selves from the Yellowstone eruption. He welcomed them into his home and let them go through his rations...and they still treated him like garbage. The teenage son was the worst. I get it, you are a growing boy, but this is the apocalypse. All he did was complain that he was hungry and then turned into an absolute monster when they had to be put on a reasonable rationing plan, so the food would last. He even wanted to take food from his very weak and sick little sister. The mom was ridiculous. All she wanted to do was cook large meals for her family all day long, using up their limited rations (actually Uncle Ryan's rations) at an alarming rate. When she could no longer cook large meals, she cried. When they were escaping the Yellowstone eruption, she wanted to stop and have a quaint picnic lunch. What world was this woman living in? Dad was a spineless idiot who could not stand up to his brat of a son. We never really got to know the sister, just that she had severe asthma. I think she would have been likable if the author bothered to expand on her character.

**Possible Spoilers

The story did get a bit too busy after the half way mark...nuclear attacks from both foreign and domestic threats, and Civil War 2 (or would it be the War of Texas Aggression) seemed to muddy the plot quite a bit and take away from the "survival in the volcanic winter" main plot line...
